What started as a small gathering of five mothers in Soma Sengupta's living room has blossomed into a thriving community of over 1,500 mothers across the Bay Area. Chai with Moms, a grassroots initiative, has become a beacon of support for parents navigating the complex and often daunting college application process.

From Isolation to Collaboration

When Soma Sengupta, Aparna Seethapalli, and Shauli Chaudhuri first came together over a cup of chai, they were seeking solace and guidance in the college application journey. As they shared their experiences and concerns, they realized that by combining their knowledge and perspectives, the process seemed less overwhelming. "I went from being isolated and afraid and scared about how I was going to navigate as a mom," Seethapalli recounts, "to being the person who's saying, 'we got this, we can do this together and if we join forces, we can accomplish anything.'"

Building a Supportive Network

As word of the Chai with Moms gatherings spread, more mothers sought to join the community, eager to find the support and resources they needed. Seethapalli explains that the group's growth was driven by a shared realization that they were not alone in their struggles. "We are offering them an opportunity, a platform to come together and actually say, gosh, it's okay to not know everything and there's somebody just like me out here," she says.

Expanding Reach, Enhancing Impact

To meet the growing demand, new Chai with Moms chapters have opened in different cities across the Bay Area. The group's activities have also expanded, with the recent launch of their first conference, which attracted 250 mothers and featured panels with mental health experts and current college students. Additionally, the group's weekly "Ask Us Anything" video calls regularly gather nearly 100 participants, providing a dynamic platform for mothers to seek guidance and share their experiences.
