Young Visionaries: Revolutionizing Theater with Teen Talent

Young Visionaries: Revolutionizing Theater with Teen Talent

At just 16 years old, Grayson Allensworth and Maya Eisbart have already made significant strides in the theater world. Four years ago, they founded New Generation Productions, a youth-led theater company that has since staged several challenging productions. Now, they are preparing to present their ambitious adaptation of the Broadway hit "Hadestown." Despite initial skepticism, these young artists aim to prove that age is no barrier to creating impactful and professional-quality performances. Their upcoming show at Montview Presbyterian Church promises to challenge perceptions and showcase the immense talent of high school students.

New Generation Productions has tackled complex and demanding works such as "Red" and "Sweeney Todd," demonstrating their commitment to artistic integrity and growth. The company's mission extends beyond mere entertainment; it seeks to inspire change through art. With a dedicated cast and orchestra, all composed of high school students, the group aims to build a statewide community of young theater enthusiasts. This article explores the journey of these remarkable teenagers and the challenges they have overcome to bring their vision to life.

From Garage Performances to Stage Productions

The story of New Generation Productions began in the garage of an 8-year-old Grayson Allensworth, who turned a motorized door into a makeshift curtain for impromptu shows. Fast forward to today, and this childhood passion has evolved into a full-fledged theater company. In 2020, during the global shutdown, Allensworth and Eisbart, inspired by their DSA teacher Andre Rodriguez, decided to create opportunities where none existed. They launched their first production, "The Trail to Oregon," which unexpectedly garnered widespread support from parents and peers alike. This initial success fueled their ambition to expand the company into a platform for young artists.

Since then, the duo has embraced a mantra of independence, insisting on running every aspect of the company themselves. They have learned to delegate tasks strategically, assembling a team of talented collaborators like Sebastian Maa, who orchestrated the music for "Hadestown." The company's philosophy revolves around empowering youth to take charge of their creative endeavors, fostering an environment where young people can thrive and grow. Through perseverance and innovation, New Generation Productions has become a beacon of inspiration for aspiring artists across Colorado.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Legacy

The path to staging "Hadestown: Teen Edition" has not been without its hurdles. Initially scheduled for November 2024 at the Bug Theatre, the production faced a setback when licensing rights were revoked due to a conflicting touring schedule. Undeterred, the co-founders pivoted, securing a new venue at Montview Presbyterian Church, complete with a rotating stage. This unexpected turn of events provided more rehearsal time and a superior performance space, ultimately enhancing the quality of the production. The resilience shown by Allensworth and Eisbart underscores their unwavering commitment to their craft.

Beyond the logistics, maintaining a cohesive team of young performers required careful management and trust-building. Liam VanDijk, a 14-year-old cast member, credits the founders for instilling in him a deep appreciation for both theater as an art form and as a business. The company's nurturing environment has fostered a sense of camaraderie among its members, many of whom have remained committed despite the challenges. As they prepare for the January performances, the founders are also grooming VanDijk to lead the company in the future, ensuring its legacy continues. Through their dedication and visionary leadership, Allensworth and Eisbart are redefining what it means to be young and ambitious in the world of theater.
