Libraries as Cultural Hubs
The island’s libraries have evolved into vibrant cultural centers, hosting a wide array of musical performances that bring people together. Claudia Taylor, Edgartown library programs coordinator, highlights the Sounds Like Summer concert series, which features local musicians like Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, Jeremy Berlin Trio, and others. These concerts are more than just entertainment; they create a sense of belonging among residents and visitors alike. The collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society further enriches the musical landscape, inviting off-island artists to share their talents. For many years, Johnny Hoy has been a staple at these events, performing in various configurations from duos to full bands. He emphasizes the unique atmosphere of outdoor library gigs, where families dance together, children laugh, and everyone shares in the joy of live music. "It’s free, accessible, and brings out a diverse crowd," he says. "We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive audience."
A Symphony of Partnerships
Partnerships between libraries and local organizations have expanded the scope of musical offerings. Virginia Penta Munro, founder of the Island Opera Club, recalls how she began collaborating with the Edgartown library in 2014 to fill a void left by the closure of opera screenings at the Capawock theater. This partnership has since introduced opera enthusiasts to monthly film screenings, fostering a love for this art form among the island’s residents.Similarly, the Vineyard Haven library co-sponsors a Sunday night ballroom dance series with Ballroom Dance MV. Liz Shick, adult program coordinator, notes that despite the library being under renovation, the event continues to thrive at the Unitarian Universalist Society’s Stevens Chapel. Live music by Delanie & Johnny adds a dynamic element to the evening, attracting both seasoned dancers and newcomers alike.
Jazz Nights and International Sounds
West Tisbury library’s Second Sunday Jazz series, curated by musician Eric Johnson, stands out as a beloved tradition. For over a decade, this series has provided a platform for talented jazz musicians, including vocalist Darby Patterson and the Jeremy Berlin Trio. Johnson reflects on the early days when occasional performances grew into a monthly event, highlighting the importance of consistent programming. "It gives us something to look forward to each month, a reason to stay connected with the music," he explains.Jeremy Berlin, who has been performing at various libraries for a decade, praises the quality of pianos maintained by these institutions. He acknowledges the rarity of live jazz performances on the island and the impact it has on the audience. "People are often moved by the experience, sometimes even overwhelmed," he says. "It’s a gift to witness the interplay among musicians up close, something many take for granted."During the summer, the West Tisbury library also welcomes international acts like Choro Das Três, a sister trio from São Paulo, Brazil. Their performances introduce the audience to choro, a musical style originating over a century ago in Brazil. Olivia Gately, the library’s programming director, expresses pride in hosting such renowned artists, bringing a global flavor to the island’s cultural scene.
Musical Education for All Ages
Libraries play a crucial role in nurturing musical talent and appreciation from a young age. The Oak Bluffs library offers “Tap with Hannah,” a class designed to introduce adults—and anyone interested—to the joys of tap dancing. Participants learn basic steps and choreography, fostering a deeper connection with rhythm and musicality. At the Chilmark library, youth services librarian Drew Dubno leads weekly storytimes that incorporate live guitar music and recorded songs for movement or games. These sessions often turn into spontaneous sing-alongs, creating memorable moments for children and their families. "It can get silly, imaginative, and always engaging," Dubno shares. "Whether we’re doing the Chicken Dance or singing along to ‘Baby Shark,’ there’s always laughter and excitement."
