Experience the Magic of the Holiday Music Series at UGA
December 21: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus
An annual tradition returns on December 21 at 7:30 p.m. as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus take the stage. They present the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah” and the glorious “Hallelujah” Chorus, led by the renowned conductor Norman Mackenzie. Before the intermission, the orchestra, chorus, and soloists perform J.S. Bach’s “Magnificat.”
The “Messiah” showcases a captivating blend of vivid choruses and virtuosic vocal solos. This year’s cast is truly exceptional. Lawson Anderson, the returning baritone, is known for his “powerful, darkly hued voice and nobility of carriage” (Cleveland Classical). Adelaide Boedecker, the soprano, is described as “emotionally transparent and beguiling of tone” (San Francisco Chronicle). Rhianna Cockrell, the mezzo-soprano, is a specialist in Baroque, Renaissance, and contemporary music, with performances praised as “unforced” and “resolute” (Oregon Arts Watch). Thomas Cooley, the tenor, has sung extensively in Europe, Asia, and 30 American states.
Conductor Norman Mackenzie: A Musical Force
Mackenzie’s talents as a musical collaborator, conductor, and concert organist have earned him international recognition. Since 2000, he has served as the Director of Choruses for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO). His role has been crucial in carrying forward the creative vision of legendary founding conductor Robert Shaw. During his tenure, the chorus has embarked on numerous tours and received several Grammy awards, including Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance.
At the ASO, Mackenzie prepares the choruses for all concerts and recordings. He works closely with Nathalie Stutzmann on the commissioning and realization of new choral-orchestral works and conducts the holiday concerts with great expertise.
